Born and raised in Switzerland, Patrick initially discovered his affinity for the finer things in life as teenager working in a restaurant owned by his my mum and her sister. During this period, he started to get interested in nosing wine.
His love of whisky commenced years later in the 1980s, while shopping on holiday in the South of France, where he first purchased a bottle of 12-year-old Springbank in an exquisite ceramic decanter. Soon thereafter he made his second purchase, a bottle of Bowmore 30-year-old, also in a beautiful ceramic decanter. He freely admits that his interest at the time was mainly in the beauty of the bottles, and not the nectar inside. Intrigued by what kind of spirit could possibly merit such attractive containers, he quickly found himself developing a passionate appreciation of whisky tasting.
Then, as luck would have it, a confluence of events catalyzed a change in his life. First, on his birthday he was given a copy of Michael Jackson's excellent book "The World Guide to Whisky." Then within a few days the Swiss government, having realized they had neglected to send Patrick a birthday present, dramatically reduced the taxes on alcohol, making it more affordable for Patrick (and the other fortunate Swiss citizens) to purchase high-end spirits.
Patrick's second passion after whisky is photography, and in 2003 he found he could combine his hobbies while on his first holiday in Scotland. During this trip he visited the Highland Park distillery and took many spectacular photos of the environment. Since then he travels to Scotland at least once a year to photograph the distilleries and to talk to the people producing the "water of life." To date he has visited about 60 distilleries and has no intention of slowing down.
In January 2006, Patrick launched his website dedicated to whisky where he shares his passion for whisky with other whisky enthusiasts. We are wound-up like a Swiss watch to have Patrick on board as a leader in our community, and encourage you to check out his website and join him here in our community.
