Gordon Wright
The Alchemist and Master Marketer

Gordon Wright started his career in whisky in 1989 when he started working as Sales Director at his family’s distillery, Springbank, in Campbeltown Scotland. For the next fifteen years while at Springbank - and latterly at Bruichladdich, he toured the world promoting the best Single Malt Scotches. During this stint Gordon opened up many new markets for Springbank and was instrumental in bringing notable bottlings to the market, including 100 proof Springbank and the Local Barley series.

Aching to start something of his own, in 1996, Gordon left the family business to start Murray McDavid, the award winning independent bottler with two of his friends, Mark Reynier and Simon Coughlin.

In 2000 Gordon, Mark and Simon made a successful bid to buy Bruichladdich from Jim Beam Brands, and in n 2001 they (along with Jim McEwan) got the distillery back into production. As part of this Herculean effort Gordon established the sales network and directed the design of the packaging for the bottled whisky.

Gordon has always felt himself part alchemist, part marketing visionary. Alchemy, based on the doctrine of transmuting base metals (such as lead into gold) is the mother and pseudoscientific mystical precursor of modern chemistry.

So it was only natural that in 2005 he left to start a unique spirits company – Alchemist – which bottles the world’s finest wood aged spirits, and The Alchemist Society. Membership in The Alchemist Society provides access to some of the more rare and esoteric spirits that are not produced in large enough quantities to make them commonly available. These include single cask spirits at cask strength, older vintages and spirits, which are relatively unknown but uncommonly yummy.

We are honoured and thrilled to have Gordon as part of our community leadership. We encourage you to visit his website and join him online, here in our community.
