David Kovacs
A Leader of the Hungarian Whisky Underground

Whisky-freak...whisky fanatic...whisky blogger, Kovacs Ur (that's Hungarian for Mr. Kovacs) started to work with whiskies when in 1998, out of sheer luck he got a job working as a whisky Brand Manager. Working on that brand (he's mum about which one it was), the world of whiskies in general so thoroughly impressed him (or perhaps was he seduced?) that he applied for a job at a major whisky producer. For the next several years he dedicated his entire life to working for that multinational company, and so hence was granted the opportunity to get to know dozens of types, brands and varieties of whiskies and various whisky characters.

During this time he was also responsible for conducting and attending many whisky tastings throughout Eastern Europe. Gorbachev didn't stand a chance!

David is a proud son of Hungary and a resident of Budapest, where he still works in the whisky business and dedicates much of his off-time with Hungary's whisky underground in pursuit of single malt perfection. In 2004 he founded the first regularly meeting whisky club in Hungary with some friends. They then established the Whisky Society of Hungary in 2005. And to keep his international connections active he is also a member of the Scotch Malt Whisky Society.

When not held up at one of Budapest's finest watering holes, where he holds other patrons hostage to his whisky stories, David is often found giving whisky presentations and hosting tastings to cities whisky-aristocracy. So it was with the fundamental believe that the world should hear the news of what is going on in eastern Europe's whisky-underground that he started publishing his 'whiskynews' blog in January 2005.

We are thrilled to have David as a leader in our fight against whisky fascism. We urge you to visit his site to read the latest news of the revolution, and to join him and the cause here in our community.
